Rathsallagh Country House Hotel is quite possibly one of the most pleasant country house venues in Ireland. Family run by the O’Flynn family, their attention to detail and hands-on approach, coupled with probably the most coveted staff in the service industry makes for a lovely relaxing experience of luxury, great food & peacefulness.

Their website will tell you that Rathsallagh Golf Course is in the top 30 golf courses in Ireland. Now we all know that there are over 400 golf courses in Ireland, but I personally believe that this statistic undersells this magnificent unique golfing masterpiece in County Wicklow – The Garden of Ireland. It is definitely one of the best parkland course in Ireland.

Designed by Peter McEvoy and Christy O’Connor Jnr, Rathsallagh will never fail to please the discerning golfer. The course itself meanders around the lovely Rathsallagh estate bringing lakes, streams, woodland and spectacular views and scenery on every hole.

Golf courses need the “Feel Good” factor to endear them to their players, at Rathsallagh when you stand up on the first tee and survey the beautiful countryside, you know that you are in for a treat, the first hole is a Par 5, which a long downhill drive required to reach the green in two shots, the green is nestled between a hill and oak woodland area to ensure that only the best approach shots are rewarded.

The adventure continues with tricky dog-leg Par 4 second hole, and the par 3’s on the course are delightfully difficult.

Another aspect of the course that I loved was the fact that when you set out to play the course, you are embarking on an adventure, and it is easy to lose all track of time and indeed your bearings at Rathsallagh.

It is hard to pick out the one single best hole at Rathsallagh, the opening and closing holes are fantastic, the par 5’s are magnificent but the one hole that you need to watch out for, the “card wrecker”, would be the 8th hole, a short dog leg par 4, which requires total accuracy to give you half a chance of clearing the water on your approach to a very cleverly hidden green. Be warned is all that I would say here and swing easy!

Upon completion, there is a lovely clubhouse which overlooks the 9th, 10th & 18th holes but if I was you, I would make my way back to Rathsallagh house, order a pint of Guinness and sit down beside one of the smoking turf fires, put my feet up and survey the menu of the day!

It will come as no surprise for those of you who know Rathsallagh that they have won many culinary awards including the Best Breakfast in Ireland numerous times.

Rathsallagh winner of the Supreme Irish Breakfast of the year 2004, and the AA Five Diamond Award for Guest Accommodation in 2005 is a large country house converted from Queen Anne stables in 1798. Located just one hour south of Dublin Airport, Rathsallagh is set in a peaceful oasis of 530 acres of parkland with its own 18 hole championship golf course.
