Carton House - Montgomerie Course

Club of the Month Archive

A Scottish golfer, you may have heard of, who happened to win the European Tour Order of Merit 7 times, designed this beauty that straddles County Meath & Kildare...

Carton House Resort & Spa, ancestral home to the Dukes of Leinster now provides the magnificent backdrop of the Montgomerie Course.

Montgomerie Course Carton House

Host to the Irish Open 2005 & 2006 and the Irish Senior Open in 2010, this fantastic resort on the outskirts of Dublin rivals the best on the worldwide stage.

The Tee Box at the opening hole is situated in Co. Meath and the fairway and green are the other side of the River Rye in Co. Kildare, and the 1st eases you in nicely into what will be a wonderful golfing experience.

Irish Golf Vacations

Some people have referred to Montgomerie Course as an “Inland Links” and there are certainly similarities with the open terrain, long wispy rough and pot bunkers.

I am not sure that I know how many bunkers there are, but I know that I have visited my fair share of them! The best advice would be to practice your sand shots and be sure to have your sand wedge in the bag as they are strategically positioned to all but the “perfect shot”.

The course is immaculately kept, fantastic fairways, large zoned, target greens with breaks to confound the best of putters.

The finishing 3 holes go Par 5 – Par 3 & Par 5 and really are a world class finish. Trouble everywhere but also scoring opportunities if you are prepared to take them. The 18th hole surely must be one of the best and most scenic finishing holes in Ireland (if not beyond). The River Rye the whole way down the right hand side with everything sloping towards it, a strategically positioned huge tree turning the “safe drive” into a “wayward drive” and  the green precariously perched above the boat house leaving little margin for error.

The 18th Carton House Montgomerie

This is all against the grand backdrop of Carton House itself which must be the one of the most beautiful homes in Ireland. Did I mention that is now a top hotel & spa, with two courses, home of the Golf Union of Ireland National Academy and much much more.

For mid to high handicappers I would recommend to play from the society tees (green tees), as this course does not tolerate fools gladly.

Inland Links

This special club has attracted golfers from across Ireland and throughout the world. Golfers who love the game, respect its traditions embrace friendship and revel in a club that can truly be called home.
